See below for Chapters 4-6.
Chapter 4:
Quote: “In this environment, the participants all stand on equal ground -no one is assigned to the role of teacher or student. Instead, anyone who has particular knowledge of, or experience with, a given subject may take on the role of mentor at any time". (51)
This really sums up the ideas of the chapter, that a classroom should be treated as a collective experience where all students and teacher are acting as mentors for the students rather than having the teacher student relationship.
Question: What are the draw backs of doing this type of teaching and having this type of environment? What can we do to establish this type of environment in the classroom?
Connection: In one of the other classes we have talked about how having students involved in teaching other students can help all of the students involved. Those that are assisting will solidify their knowledge in their topic and those that are being assisted can have a different perspective presented to them on how the topic.
Epiphany/Aha: By creating a culture of learning like this I can improve my students' abilities to understand the material. I just need to make sure that I establish this type of environment at the beginning of the year and reinforce it throughout the years.
Chapter 5:
Quote: “We don’t mean to suggest that every interaction with the new media creates a learning environment. Rather, we suggest that each collective has the potential to make learning fun and easy and to allow people to follow their desires and passions in productive and fruitful ways.” (72)
It is important that we are careful in using the technology, because it will not always give a good learning experience. We must therefore choose what to use and how to use it while keeping in mind our goals.
Question: What are the best ways to make sure that we have as many positive experiences as we possibly can?
Connection: As we have discussed, we need to make sure that we are checking the communities that we are working with while we are online and making sure that they will be beneficial for use or our students.
Epiphany/Aha: If we connect with other educators online we are a lot more likely to have positive experiences online and also ensure that our students have positive experiences too.
Chapter 6:
Quote: “The new culture of learning nurtures collective indwelling. With access to the nearly endless supply of collectives today, learning that is driven by passion and play is poised to significantly alter and extend our ability to think, innovate, and discover in ways that have not previously been possible. Most of all, it may allow us to ask questions that have never before been imaginable.” (89)
We will be learning about all of the new technologies and will have to learn along with our students. We will become learners while our students will become the teachers for the new technology.
Question: What are some more things that we can do to be prepared for the new things that we will discover and the new ways we will discover them?
Connection: We have already seen new ways of discovering, innovating, and thinking through things such as Twitter.
Epiphany/Aha: There will be a lot of change coming in the future that we will have no idea about. We will need to give our students the best skills possible so that they can survive the future.
